Metallica - Death Magnetic

September 15th 2008 05:51
Coldplay can shove it, this is the biggest album of the year, and I honestly didn't know what to expect. I'd heard good things for a while, that Metallica were getting back into the groove. Then they released the single 'The Day that Never Comes'.... I wasn't impressed. Sure it was better than St. Anger, but nothing mind blowing, nothing I'd class as worthy of Metallica, the band that is to metal what the Beatles are to all music.

So I've given the album a couple of listens now, and I can admit: I like it. Even The Day that Never Comes is good when heard in context of the whole album. It's thrashy, it's still a little Southern at times (hey I love a good bit of Southern rock/metal, just a don't want an entire Metallica album to be this), it's got elements of newer music without sounding like Korn or System of A Down as St. Anger did.

Death Magnetic

The album is fast, but not Dragonforce Power Metal, and most importantly it has some wicked solos, fantastic riffs, thumping bass, thrashy drums and the signature Hepfield guitar 'duka-duka-duka-duka' (I'm not a guitar player I don't what it's called).

It's pure Metallica. It may not be Master of Puppets or ...And Justice For All but it's definately the best thing since Black Album.

Some of the lyrics (I'm looking at you 'All Nightmare Long') are a bit tryhard, but the music in general make sup for it. Trujillo is a gun addition to the line up. His rumbling bass lines fit so well, and he's so quick it fits the more thrashy sound that they've got going again. 'The End of the Line' has a really cool riff it's worth mentioning. It's not a classic Metallica riff (like say the previously mentioned 'All Nightmare Long' has) but its sweet.

Anyway, it rocks. Very worth a listen, and pure redemption after the peice of crap that was St. Anger.

i'm guessing you're talking about the palm mutes (duka-duka) crunchy and deep...?

That sounds like them. I could probably name most of the bass techniques, but some guitar terminology is a tad beyond me unfortunately.
