Cog - Sharing Space

As part of what I plan to be a regular event, I’m doing a brief review on the albums I’ve been listening the most too recently. First up is Aussie progressive band Cog’s latest Sharing Space. It freaking rocks. I’ve been a fan since their early EPs, and this is a change of pace for them. Their early EPs and debut album have a very Tool sound to them. This is a lot slower and not as blatantly heavy the earlier stuff.
The band and this album especially, has some serious political motifs. Well by motifs I pretty much mean left leaning government bashing. Probably my biggest complaint of the whole album is that it’s not particularly poetic.
I don't listen at all to the government
I just said no, do you hear?
I don't listen at all to the government
The government has got to go away
Not quite Shakespeare is it? Subtlety is a little lacking.
The best parts of the album are the start and the end. ‘No Other Way’, ‘Are You Interested?’, and the final four songs: ‘The Town of Lincoln’, ‘Bitter Pills’, ‘Four Walls’ and ‘Problem, Reaction, Solution’ are fantastic. They range from the slower, even pseudo-acoustic ‘Bitter Pills’, through to the angry almost anarchist ‘The Town of Lincoln’. ‘Problem, Reaction, Solution’ is one of the best closing songs I have ever heard.
This album has only reinforced Cog’s place as one of the best bands in Australia at the moment. As far as Hard Rock bands go, Cog are pretty much the top of the pyramid in the country. I’d seriously recommend this album to anyone else who enjoyed their old stuff, or any fans of bands like Tool, Karnivool or Coheed and Cambria.
