Baroness - Red Album
May 26th 2008 00:08
Wow, you know you've been slack with posting when your list of recently listened to has been outdated like 6 times. OK, so the next album on the list is debut album from American metal band Baroness, titled Red Album.
I'm not entirely sure how to describe Baroness' style. Wikipedia labels them as "Sludge Metal, Progressive Metal, Alternative metal, Metal, Post-hardcore". The only band I know that they sound similar too is Mastodon. So if anyone knows some other similar stuff I'd love to hear it. Prog is probably the best name for them, even though it's a genre that means nothing.
The vocalist kinda shits me, but you get used to his voice, because everything else there kicks so much damn arse.
The stand-out tracks are probably 'Rays on Pinion', 'Isak', and probably 'Aleph' although it's one of those albums that just flows so well together it's hard to seperate them into individual songs instead of taking this for an album as a whole.
I'm yet to hear the early Baroness EPs so I can't compare how their sound has changed, but metal magazine 'Revolver' labelled it 'Best Metal Album of the Year' which is pretty high praise for a debut album with albums for Machine Head, Dillinger Espace Plan, Dream Theatre, Megadeath amongst many more.
It's a great album worth listening to far any metal fan, and I really would love to hear some similar bands (other than Mastodon, who I already know and love) if anyone knows them.
