Australian Hard Rock
July 24th 2008 02:01
Australia has a long and venerable history of quality hard rock bands. AC/DC is, of course, the king of pretty much all Aussie bands, and is one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.
More recently bands like Wolfmother, Jet and the Vines have spread some Aussie loving across the world, but to tell the truth I just don't dig them that much. I mean they're good. But they aren't the best bands we've produced. So I started thinking, who would be the best hard rock bands Australia has right now.
I think I went a bit heavy in my desicions as the three bands that came straight to mind for me are definately on the metal side of things. But they kick arse so you can get stuffed.
Cog, Karnivool and The Butterfly Effect. That's my triumverate of Aussie Hard Rock.
Cog is definately more in the prog metal end, with The Butterfly Effect more in the standard heavy rock scale, and Karnivool is some kind of happy medium. I really can't think of any bands that are as quality as these ones in this, reletively large, genre. I'm not one to sing the praises of 'indy' music (which is highly ironically named for the most commercial of all genres) so it's possible I've missed some gems somewhere.
Unfortunately, Karnivool and The Butterfly Effect only have 30 second previous for me to embed. Which is a bit shit, but it's the best I can do.
An honourable mention to Shihad too. But they're technically from New Zealand. Oh and also to The Vasco Era, but their EP was bluegrass, then their Album was nigh on metal, so who knows what to so with them.
Agree? Disagree?
